On April 10, Beautifully Broken came to life at CT State Middlesex, where the Middlesex Community College Foundation hosted a screening and conversation with 2020 alumnus Jared Buchanan and filmmaker Daniel Herzog. The documentary follows Jared’s journey as he runs the Cocodona 250, a grueling 250-mile ultramarathon across the Arizona desert, marking the 10-year anniversary of his father’s death by suicide.

During his presentation, Jared spoke candidly about his father, Paul, a former East Hartford police officer, and the message he left behind: “Make my death an issue so you can help others like me.” That call to action became the driving force behind both Jared’s run and the film itself.
Through raw storytelling and striking visuals, Beautifully Broken explores grief, trauma and resilience, while raising awareness about mental health, post-traumatic stress and suicide prevention.
After the screening, attendees reflected on the film’s emotional impact and the courage it takes to turn personal loss into purpose. Many were moved by Jared’s honesty and his commitment to helping others, emphasizing the importance of connection and conversation.
Jared’s story served as a reminder that resilience is not about perfection, but about continuing forward and using one’s voice to make a difference.
